Habitat:
Brown Trout can be found in streams, dams,
and
flowing rivers.
They prefer
cold and dams or rivers that are situated with high altitudes such as
near mountains. They will thrive in cold, deep bodies of water.
Distribution:
Found throughout South Africa namely Western Cape, Kwazulu Natal,
Northern Province, Eastern Cape etc.
Bait:
Will accept a variety of baits such as crabs, frogs,
worms, smaller fish and lizards in nature. There are specific flies and
lures that can be purchased to target trout. Brown trout have been
known to eat smaller, baby trout in nature. It is not recommended to
use trout as bait.
Description:
Brown Trout are dark brown coloured on their top half and almost a
yellow colour on their underside. They are spotted and have red spots
on their tails.
Fishing
Strategy:
Breeding season is between June and September. It is not recommended to
fish for trout during breeding season as females filled with eggs will
be caught and stressed. Trout breed in flowing water and eggs released
in still water will die. Brown trout are territorial and do they can be
found in the same place if the angler returns to the same fishing spot.
Eating Quality: Excellent Eating Fish.
